Rottweiler Pitbull mixture qualities and traits

Nowadays, the choice between products is enormous. Pure or milk chocolate; regular coffee or latte… The same holds true when deciding on which dog breed to choose as a pet. If you are already puzzled between a purebred Rottweiler and a Rottweiler mixture, read on to learn more about the Rottweiler Pitbull mixture, its pros and cons, as well as what to expect from it in the long run.

When dog breeders started mixing breeds, the reason for it was to enhance the qualities and diminish the negative sides of particular breeds. That is why today, when talking of cross breeds, i.e. mixture dogs, it is possible to observe their physical appearance, character or social skills, health (i.e. genetic predisposition for illnesses of both breeds), and care and grooming, of both single and mixed breeds.

We mentioned earlier that some of the popular Rottweiler mixes are the Rottweiler Labrador mix, German shepherd Rottweiler mix, and Rottweiler Pitbull mix. We will here briefly tackle what to expect from the last one: Rottweiler Pitbull mix.

Rott Pitbull appearance

When mixing breeds, one can never know for sure what to expect in advance. Only time will tell what a mixture of Rottweiler and Pitbull will look like and what to expect from it in terms of character, health or physical appearance.

It is very common to have a 100% Rottweiler temper in a 100% Pitbull body, or vice versa, but even in those cases such body is never quite like the body of a purebred dog of either of these two breeds.

Rottweiler-Pitbull mixture pup generally has the facial structure of a Pitbull, while they often keep floppy ears and a long curled tail of a Rottweiler. Also, depending on their litters, these features may significantly vary.

On the other hand, when it comes to pigmentation, mixing Pitbulls with Rotts can only produce the dominantly inherent color of either of them. That is why Rot-Pitbull offspring is most likely to be black, or black and tan, as they most often take after their Rottweiler parent.

Rott Pitbull character and socialising with humans

Character unpredictability of dog mixtures is one of the reasons why people tend to have second thoughts with them.

With pureblood breeds, it is already well known what character to expect once the dog is mature enough. Rottweilers are calm, good-natured, obedient, courageous, fearless, confident, devoted and self-assured, while Pitbulls are strong willed, affectionate, obedient, loyal, stubborn, intelligent, friendly, clownish, and courageous.

On the other hand, cross breeds or mixed breeds are always risky because, as the puppy matures, more positive or more negative qualities might manifest. Basically, you never know what their character will be, but what is for sure is that they respond well to training and develop traits that are trained in them.

Keep in mind that character of any dog can be trained, so only dogs that are trained to be aggressive will actually be aggressive. Work on their amiableness, and you will get a friendly dog who enjoys playing with people and other dogs.

Rottweiler Pitbull health

Rottweilers are naturally prone to hip dysplasia, eczema, dermatitis, seborrhea, sepsis, or demodicosis, to name just a few. On the other hand, most common diseases in Pit bulls are hip dysplasia, knee problems, thyroid disease, allergies, mange, skin infections, ichthyosis, or nerve disease.

Since a Rott-Pitbull carries genes of both breeds, any of the illnesses or conditions could emerge when mixing these two. So far, they have most often experienced hip issues, skin problems and cataracts, especially in older dogs.

It is very important here to pay attention to your dog’s health, no matter the breed, so as to prevent potential health risks from developing into legitimate illnesses and conditions that need medical assistance or medicaments.

Rottweiler Pitbull care and grooming

As previously said, a Rott-Pitbull mixture is most likely to lean towards black or black and tan coloration and Rottweiler markings. That also means that their coat is short, with minimal shedding, and is low maintenance, hence there is little or no worry about grooming a dog that is a mixture of Rottweiler and Pitbull.

When it comes to nutrition, Rott-Pitbull is a muscular, energetic doggie that requires a balanced diet with plenty of food rich in proteins.

Also, bear in mind that both these dogs are energetic and enjoy plenty of exercise to keep them in shape and to put all their playfulness to a good cause. If not exercised properly, this extra energy they naturally have might end up causing undesired behavior.

If you own a Rottweiler-Pitbull mixture pup, take it for runs and long walks to keep it fit and to have fun with. If you do not own a garden or backyard where they could play, make use of local dog parks, but first make sure to train your dog to be friendly with both other people and other dogs. Due to their playfulness, Rott-Pitbull pup loves playing with children, and is able to play with them for hours.

While we are at the topic of space, domestic pets always prefer enough indoor and outdoor space, this mixture not an exception. If you decide to take it, think twice before keeping it in an apartment. An apartment is not a living space where a Rottweiler-Pitbull would enjoy, because they need a space where they could run and have more fun, such as open space and nature.

When it comes to pets, always keep in mind that they are living beings that, first and foremost, require your love and affection. Yes, they need an adequate living space, and special diets, and specific training and grooming, but none of these is even close to treating your dog properly, with having in mind its specific needs.

Learning about your dog’s traits and character, about their specific needs and training aptitude, is the best you could do for your dog. That way you can both benefit – your dog from having a knowledgeable owner, and you as having a reliable pet or a working dog.

It is also important to keep in touch with dog breeders and other owners, as they might be the best helping hand when you are in a dilemma on what to do. That is why here in Fere Perfectum dog kennel we advise you to stay in touch with us after you receive your puppy from us. We like staying informed on how our pups do with their new families and gladly share with you all news and info!
